How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
For my A2 course I was required to make my own trailer, poster and magazine for my proposed film. Films use a combination of trailers ,posters and various advertising techniques to inform the audience of the release of the film. In order to make these three products as effective as possible I needed each media text to compliment each other and link.
Characters
In my trailer I feature four main characters ,two girls and two boys but also the masked axe murderer who's true identity is not revealed.Characters are an important feature of every film and help move the narrative along. They can also be a key selling technique and like many films the audience may go to see the film because of a particular actor/actress that is their idol /can relate too. I think that the use of characters in the combination of my main product and ancillary texts works very effectively .
In my poster I feature one of the female actresses Shona who is pictured hiding around a rock .In my magazine it features two more of the main characters ,Max and I . Instead of using the same person or people on the poster and on the magazine I am able to advertise more of the characters and by using range of characters I am able to inform the audience of more of the people who feature in the film so their is more chance of different members of my target audiences relating to at least on of the main characters. If I kept to the same character on both of the ancillary tasks I feel that the combination of products would not have worked aswell as I would have been sticking to one gender and this already eliminates some of my target audience. The image of the characters on the magazine also link with the video because of the visual link as it is an image taken of a scene from the trailer .
The characters names are also credited on the movie poster so there is always a strong link between all of the characters featured.
Genre
Keeping and creating media texts that link back and relate to the horror genre is key when creating a combination of media texts .It was essential to inforce this primarily in the trailer but also in the poster and magazine.
My trailer was the most effective text that relates to the genre . I thought the conventions and codes we used in the trailer suited and followed ones used in the genre and the audience could understand that it was a horror film. Ways in which we made the trailer fit the genre was through editing techniques, camera shots, sounds etc. Editing allowed us to add the record effect and scratchy, rough effects to clips. The range of camera shots allowed us to show different perspectives from bothe the attacker and the innocent. The sounds used made the trailer more intense especially at parts where fast paced editing was required. All the techniques together construct a narrative that links back to the horror genre.
In all three media texts I felt that I created a feeling of suspense and of the unknown. Both my images in my poster and magazine show pictures of people hiding and scared but don't actually show what they scared off. The trailer never shows the villain unmasked so in all three of the media texts the villain is disguised and the real identity is left to the imagination.
Title/Font
The name of my film was 'The Quarry'. The title sometimes reveals important information about the film and hints at the plot.
Throughout the trailer whenever text is featured, for the title or 'Dont look back' the same font and style of text is used against the same dirty ,quarry like background. This creates a sense of continuity but also links back to the horror genre and the dirty, muddy quarry. The same font is also used in the poster to reinforce the link between the media texts .Instead using black text however it is white to contrast against the dark background . The actual font is quite basic but still edgy and mysterious. Paintbrushes were also used for the title to emphasise the underlying scary and mysterious tone. I couldnt use the same font for the magazine as it is unconventional for a film magazine but the title ' The Quarry' was still displayed on the cover so it still links it back to the film.
Editing
When I think of horror I think of dark ,gloomy ,mysterious colours. It was hard to keep to this colour scheme especially when filming as filming in the dark resulted in very low quality videos and photos. Instead we relied on editing the videos after in Final Cut Pro to maintain the horror look and create an idea that the action happened at night time rather than in the day time. Editing was also key in the production of the poster. Photoshop allowed me to change the brightness/contrast of the image that was taken in high key lighting to one that instead looked like it was taken at night .The image links in with the mood of the video and employs a similar atmosphere to the poster. magazine however did not require editing. It was the only piece of media text that I used a high key lighting photo,as the entire colour scheme of the magazine was very bright and after previous research into magazines I realised that even the horror movies on the front cover are not as dark and sinister as the poster or trailer.
I feel overall that the three products have worked really well together and the combination of products work better than I first thought and will hopefully attract the target audience.I believe the ancillary looks very professional and we have used our research as well as developing original ideas well. The product also works well with the music video itself.

Final Photo for magazine and poster
Image for my poster
This image was taken on the final day of filming and I think it will suit perfectly for my poster. It will not need much editing but I will darken the photo and maybe burn a shadow on outline on photoshop.
Image for my magazine
This image was also taken on the same day . For this photo I used a camera stand as we were already filming this scene for our actual trailer. I think for my magazine the image will be to wide so I will need to cut off the left hand third. Similarly to my poster I will burn the photo around the characters faces to make them more edgy and dramatic.

Magazine Photo planning
After researching into the layout of other film magazines I have a range of shots that I may use in my own one .
First Shot :
I really like the positioning of the girl on Total Films "Hunger games" magazine . I think I will do a shot similar to this . Shona seems to be the ideal person to shot as if people do not have a preferred gender for the front cover they prefer females and I cannot use myself .
I will take a midshot of her .She will dressed in the same jumper worn in the trailer so continuity is kept the same. Like the hunger games one she will also have a shocked or scared facial expression reinforcing the idea that she is scared or being attacked and this links back to the genre. She will turned slightly towards the camera like the magazine below to give the idea that she isn't posing but in action and beware of whats around her .
Second Shot :
I dont think this will work as well but I have decided to also take a close up shot of her similar to the magazine below. A lot of people I asked like close up shot photos as they seem dramatic and intense and this can sell well. Once again I will try to use Shona as the main image star but I can also try taking photos of the males to see who works best as it may not go to plan and work as well.
Clothing will not matter as it will not be seen. This shot is more focused on the facial expression . I want it to be very dramatic and will edit it after by adding blood or bruises .High key lighting will probably be used t capture her face in full light but as it is meant to be a horror movie I don't think this will work well so low key lighting may work better.

Drafts magazine
This is a very basic idea of initial magazine
I think the hardest thing is trying to make the magazine appealing . I played around with the background and i think this suits the genre better .
